Like other Gran Reserva and Reserva releases, arguably the flagship series of Cuban cigars, it is a special, aged version of a regular production cigar.
In this case, that cigar is the Partagás Serie E No.2, a 5 1/2 (140mm) x 54 robusto extra size known as the duke within the Cuban vitola naming system.
Each year, Habanos S.A. selects a single regular production cigar from one of its largest brands to be designated as a Gran Reserva or Reserva. Currently, Gran Reservas are selected for odd-numbered years and Reservas in even numbered years though recently the cigars have not been shipped in the year they were announced. For example, the Partagás was announced in 2021. For a Gran Reserva release, Habanos S.A. says the tobaccos are aged for five years before rolling. In the case of the Partagás Serie E No.2 Gran Reserva, the tobacco came from cosecha 2015, the 2015 harvest.
